# Particles

> Particle bursts and shapes: rings, spheres, lines, helices, orbitals, tornados, slashes and equations.

Particles and particle shapes. They all take a particle with `particle` (or `p`), and draw around each target, so they work with entity and location targeters alike.

```yaml theme={null}
- particle{p=flame;a=30;hs=0.5;vs=1} @self
- particlering{p=soul_fire_flame;radius=5;points=48} @selfLocation
- particleline{p=end_rod} @target                      # a beam from the mob to its target
- particleorbital{p=enchant;radius=1.5;ticks=60} @self  # circles the mob for 3 seconds
```

| Mechanic | Usage | What it does |
| :- | :- | :- |
| `effect:atom` also `e:atom`, `atom` | `atom{particleorbital=<p>;particlenucleus=<p>;orbitals=3;radius=1}` | An atom: a nucleus with particles orbiting it. |
| `mythicenhanced:particles` also `me:particles`, `mod:particles`, `aux:emitter` | `mythicenhanced:particles{emitter=<id>}` | Accepted for compatibility; needs a client mod and does nothing here. |
| `particle` also `particles`, `effect:particles`, `e:particles`, `e:p` | `particle{p=<particle>;a=10;hs=0;vs=0;s=0;y=<offset>}` | Spawns particles at the target. `hs`/`vs` are the horizontal and vertical spread. |
| `particlebox` also `effect:particlebox`, `e:pb`, `pb` | `particleBox{p=<particle>;radius=1;amount=32}` | A box of particles around the target. |
| `particleequation` also `particleeq`, `pe`, `effect:particleequation`, `e:peq`, `peq` | `particleEquation{p=<particle>;x=<expr>;y=<expr>;z=<expr>}` | Plots a curve from `x`, `y`, `z` formulas. See [Particle Equations](https://entities.lodemc.net/particle-equations.md). MythicMobs' implicit `equation=` form works too. |
| `particlehelix` | `particlehelix{particle=<name>;radius=1;height=3;points=48;turns=3}` | Draws a rising helix of particles at the target. |
| `particleline` also `effect:particleline`, `e:pl`, `pl` | `particleLine{p=<particle>;db=0.25}` | A line of particles from the caster to the target. |
| `particlelineequation` also `effect:particlelineequation`, `particlelineeq` | `particleLineEquation{p=<particle>;eqx=0;eqy=sin(t);eqz=0}` | A line to the target, shaped by equations. |
| `particlelinehelix` also `effect:particlelinehelix`, `particlehelixline` | `particleLineHelix{p=<particle>;helixradius=0.5;helixlength=2}` | A helix of particles wound along a line to the target. |
| `particlelinering` also `effect:particlelinering`, `particleringline` | `particleLineRing{p=<particle>;ringpoints=8;ringradius=0.5}` | Rings of particles spaced along a line to the target. |
| `particleorbital` also `effect:particleorbital`, `e:particleorbital`, `particlecircle`, `effect:particlecircle` | `particleOrbital{p=<particle>;radius=2;points=8;ticks=20;interval=1}` | Particles circling the target for a while. |
| `particlering` also `effect:particlering`, `e:pr`, `pr` | `particleRing{p=<particle>;radius=2;points=16}` | A flat ring of particles around the target. |
| `particlesphere` also `effect:particlesphere`, `e:ps`, `ps` | `particleSphere{p=<particle>;radius=2;amount=64}` | A sphere of particles around the target. |
| `particletornado` also `effect:particletornado`, `e:pt` | `particleTornado{p=<particle>;maxradius=3;height=4;duration=40}` | A spinning tornado of particles at the target. |
| `particlewave` also `effect:particlewave`, `e:pw` | `particleWave{p=<particle>;duration=20;width=1;lengthfront=5}` | A wave of particles travelling out from the caster. |
| `polygon` | `polygon{points=5;radius=1;skip=2}` | A polygon or star outline of particles. |
| `slash` | `slash{points=10;radius=2;angle=180}` | A sweeping arc of particles, like a sword slash. |

## Particle options

* **Spread.** `hs` spreads particles across both ground axes, `vs` up and down, and `spread` sets all three at once.
* **Block and item particles** (`block`, `item`, `falling_dust`, …) take their material as `m=dirt`.
* **Coloured dust** takes `color=#ff0000` (or `color=255,0,0`) and `size`.
* Old particle names from MythicMobs packs, such as `block_crack`, `redstone` and `spell_mob`, still resolve.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **`particlecircle` is now the animated orbital**, as in MythicMobs. For a static flat ring, use `particlering`.
