# Placeholders

> Tokens like <caster.hp> and <target.name> that are filled in when a line runs, in text and in numbers.

A placeholder is a token in angle brackets that is filled in when the line runs:

```yaml theme={null}
- message{m=&7You struck &c<caster.name>&7! It has <caster.hp> health left.} +onHurt @trigger
- damage{a=<caster.level>*2} @target
```

They work in any text a mechanic shows (messages, titles, action bars, names, commands, holograms) and in **numbers**: an option that takes a number also takes a placeholder, a range like `1to5`, or a small sum (`<caster.level>*2+5`).

Text is resolved **per recipient**, so `<target.name>` is each player's own name when one message reaches several.

## Who

Every entity placeholder starts with who it is about:

| Prefix | Is |
| :- | :- |
| `caster.`, `mob.`, `self.` | the mob running the skill |
| `target.`, `player.` | the target the line is acting on (in a dialog, the talking player) |
| `trigger.`, `killer.` | the entity that fired the trigger |
| `owner.` | the caster's owner |
| `parent.` | the mob that summoned the caster |

`<caster>` alone, with nothing after the prefix, is its name.

## What

Add any of these after the prefix: `<target.hp>`, `<caster.l.x>`.

| Field | Value |
| :- | :- |
| `name` | its name |
| `display` | its custom display name, with colours |
| `uuid` | its UUID |
| `hp`, `mhp`, `php` | health, max health, health as a percentage |
| `damage`, `armor`, `luck` | the attribute's value |
| `stat.<attribute>` | any attribute: `<caster.stat.attack_speed>` |
| `level` | its [level](https://entities.lodemc.net/mob-levels.md) |
| `l.x`, `l.y`, `l.z` | block coordinates; add `.double` for exact ones: `<caster.l.y.double>` |
| `l.w`, `l.yaw`, `l.pitch` | world, yaw and pitch |
| `type` | the vanilla entity type |
| `type.name`, `mythic_type` | the LodeEntities mob id |
| `stance` | its stance (see `setstance`) |
| `target` | the name of whatever it is targeting |
| `threat` | the caster's threat toward it |
| `tt.size`, `tt.top` | how many are on its threat table, and who is on top |
| `children.size` | how many mobs it has summoned |
| `velocity` | its speed |
| `item.type`, `item.amount`, `item.model` | the held item's type, stack size and custom model data |
| `block.type` | the block it stands on |
| `ydiff` | its height relative to the caster |
| `fovoffset` | degrees between it and where the caster is looking |
| `raytrace` | the block it is looking at, as `x,y,z` |
| `var.<name>` | a [variable](https://entities.lodemc.net/variables.md) stored on it |
| `score.<objective>` | its scoreboard score |
| `tag.<tag>` | `true` if it has that scoreboard tag |

## Variables

| Placeholder | Is |
| :- | :- |
| `<var.NAME>` | a variable on the caster (short for `<caster.var.NAME>`) |
| `<target.var.NAME>` | a variable on the target |
| `<skill.var.NAME>` | a variable in this skill run |
| `<global.var.NAME>`, `<world.var.NAME>` | a server-wide or per-world variable |

An unset variable is empty, and numbers print without a trailing `.0`.

## Skill values

| Placeholder | Is |
| :- | :- |
| `<skill.NAME>` | a parameter passed by `skill{s=fireball;damage=10}`: `<skill.damage>` is `10` inside `fireball` |
| `<skill.targets>` | how many targets the calling line handed down |
| `<skill.power>` | the skill's power |
| `<skill.var.damage-amount>` | on `+onHurt` and damage auras, the damage taken |

## Everything else

| Placeholder | Is |
| :- | :- |
| `<random.1to5>` | a whole number in the range, rolled each time |
| `<random.float.1to5>` | a decimal in the range |
| `<score.OBJECTIVE.ENTRY>` | a scoreboard score for any entry |
| `<global.score.OBJECTIVE>` | a server-wide score |
| `%placeholder%` | a PlaceholderAPI placeholder, when PlaceholderAPI is installed |

MythicMobs' escape codes for characters YAML or the line syntax would otherwise eat work too: `<&co>` for `:`, `<&sc>` for `;`, `<&cm>` for `,`, `<&eq>` for `=`, `<&lc>` and `<&rc>` for `{` and `}`, `<&lb>` and `<&rb>` for `[` and `]`, `<&nm>` for `#`, `<&sp>` for a space, `<&nl>` for a new line.

Addons can add their own prefixes; see [Extending the Effect Language](https://entities.lodemc.net/extending-effects.md#custom-placeholders).
